Pancakes are the best thing to happen to (a) breakfast and (b) Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Penner. Ever since he disclosed that he injured himself while eating a stack of "delicious pancakes" — unintentionally hilarious, given his notorious lack of conditioning — Penner has been a tremendously good sport about it. There was his "open letter" response to the story; his hilarious self-deprecating performance while interviewing his teammates; and now, the autograph above.

Learn to Spot a Pre-Printed Autograph!

Here are a few steps you can take to help recognize a pre-printed autograph. These tips do require you to have the autograph in your possession.

1. The signature will appear to be below the surface of the glossy portion of the photo and it will often appear very ‘flat’.

2. To test this, hold the photo at an angle very close to a bright source of light. A real autograph is on surface of the photo and should reflect differently than the rest of the surface. It will be very obvious when it is a legitimate autograph signed on top of the photo. A preprint will blend right in with the surface of the photo because it is actually part of the photo and the glossy reflection will be the same in the background of the photo as well as where the autograph is printed. You may have to move the photo around to get the right angle and notice the difference in reflection but with a little practice you'll become adept at this in no time.

3. Since the autographs are duplications of the originals, if you happen to have more than one of the same picture you will notice that the autograph will be exactly the same. It will be very obvious as nobody ever signs the same way twice. You might also do an Internet search to see if you can find other examples of that photo for sale with the same exact signature.

4. As a last resort, you can place some alcohol on a Q-tip and try to erase a portion of the signature. However, this does not always work and when it does it damages the autograph which is less than ideal.

Secret Index of Collectible Autographs

A Secret Index Autograph Investment Report published by Paul Fraser Collectibles of Bristol, England, tracks the forty rarest and most investment-worthy autographs in the world. The price of the average autograph from the PFC40 rose 14.84% per year. And, he notes, "The rising trend shows no sign of stopping."

Calling autographs a "mid- to long-term alternative investment that you may not have thought of before," Paul Fraser believes the market for collectibles is gaining strength, and he cites several reasons: 1) baby boomers are "nostalgia investors" who have a lot of wealth; 2) China is a nation of enthusiasts; 3) there are an estimated 200 million collectors in the world, and that is predicted to double in 20 years; 4) leading collectors continue to fight over the best pieces; 5) museums are still actively acquiring; and 6) there is a finite supply and growing demand.

Some of the autograph examples PFC offers in the Secret Index (recently featured on MSN Money) are Neil Armstrong (up 981.8% since 2000), Fidel Castro (up 22% since 2000), Walt Disney (up 22.65% since 2000), and George Harrison (up 26.10% since 2000). Other figures on the list include Salvadore Dali, Bob Dylan, and J.K. Rowling.

The earning power of these items is quite aside from the fact that autograph collecting, like book collecting, is often a personal pursuit. But the fruits of that pursuit are genuinely good investments, some better than others. It's certainly worth a look at the Secret Index!

Treated Harrison Before Beatles U.S. Debut on Ed Sullivan.

Hidden away in a stack of records for 47 years, the Beatles album marking the most important event in rock and roll history is being auctioned October 1.

The “Meet the Beatles” album was signed by John, Paul, George and Ringo, with a special inscription added by George, the day before America met the Beatles on the “The Ed Sullivan Show,” February 9, 1964.

George’s inscription was a thank you to Dr. Jules Gordon, the house physician at The Plaza Hotel. Dr. Gordon treated Harrison’s 104-degree fever and raw throat that threatened to keep him from joining the Beatles for their historic Sunday American debut. George was so ill that Beatles’ manager Neil Aspinall had to stand in for him for most of Saturday’s rehearsals.

But Dr. Gordon’s shots and vaporizer treatments started working and George was able to join rehearsals later in the day. George’s sister, Louise, was charged with watching over him until the doctor came back Sunday to check on his recovery.

Knowing how excited his sons would be that he treated one of the Beatles, Dr. Gordon sent someone to get an album, hoping “the Boys” would sign it before he left Saturday. The Beatles were happy to oblige, with an especially grateful George writing:

Authenticated by Frank Caiazzo, the world’s most respected Beatles autograph authenticator, it is the only personalized album known that was signed by all four Beatles while they were in New York for the “Ed Sullivan Show.”

While as many as seven “Meet the Beatles” are known to have been signed during this time, this is the only album that clearly commemorates the Beatles’ first American performance—and Dr. Gordon’s pivotal role.
Their appearance on Ed Sullivan was more than the Beatles’ American debut. It launched The British Invasion, which brought a flood of British bands to America, including the groundbreaking likes of The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds and The Moody Blues. These top British artists inspired American musicians, much like Elvis, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry had inspired the British Rockers in the 1950s. Their combined influences changed the sound of rock and roll music forever, making it the dominant music worldwide to this day.

Will it Break $100,000.00 on October 1?

This is only the 15th band-signed U.S. release Beatles album known to exist—and seven of them are “Meet the Beatles.” Dr. Gordon’s family consigned the album to Case Antiques for their October 1 auction, and while their estimate is $40,000 to $45,000, it could bring $100,000-plus. U.S. release Beatles albums generally sell for about $100,000 or more, and the importance of this personalized album means it will likely sell for a substantial premium—whether at the auction or later if the successful bidder offers it for sale.

Dr. Gordon’s family offered the other “Meet the Beatles” they had in Case’s Spring auction last May. That one, which Dr. Gordon had signed for one of his sons but was not inscribed or personalized, sold for $63,250 and is now being offered by the buyer at $125,000. Case is primarily an art and antique auction house, and many Beatles collectors didn’t now the album was being sold. So while it went for a good price, it didn’t bring as much as it likely would have at one of the traditional autograph auction houses.

That’s not likely to happen this time.

James Dean’s Intimate Letters to Girlfriend Coming to Auction

Three James Dean handwritten letters to his girlfriend, never before offered for sale, will be sold at Christie's London November 23, 2011. I've posted the article below from Autograph Magazine. Take a look!

James Dean handwritten letters are among the rarest and most valuable of Hollywood autographs. Only a few have come to market since Dean’s tragic death in a 1955 car crash, just 24 years old. So when Neil Roberts, Christie’s Head of Pop Culture in London, asked for any information we might have on them to help him with a potential consignment, I had to know more.

But I had to wait….

“At the moment they are reluctant to send me any copies,” Neil said. “However the names and places they provided seem to add up. I’m sure you will understand that at this time I cannot pass on any details.”

That was a year and a half ago. The wait was worth it.

On November 23, Christie’s will auction three James Dean handwritten letters never before offered for sale during their fall Pop Culture: Film and Entertainment Memorabilia sale. They’re so rare that even one would be a noteworthy event—I don’t know if three have been auctioned in the last 20 years. What makes these 1954 letters especially fascinating—and desirable—is that Dean wrote them to his on and off girlfriend for two years, Barbara Glenn, during the period he was discovered and became a star. They’re filled with his feelings and experiences during that time. They are as passionate as Dean was onscreen, and sometimes even more raw.

The letters provide candid accounts of Dean’s life, sent from out of town tryouts for “The Immoralist” in Philadelphia and from behind the scenes of his first foray into Hollywood, “East of Eden.” The emotional letters reveal the strains of Dean’s work and their long distance relationship, and come with copies of never published, private family photographs of the couple from Barbara Glenn’s son, filmmaker Keith Gordon.

“As I remember her stories,” Gordon recalls, “my mother was introduced to James Dean—whom she always referred to as ‘Jimmy’—by their mutual close friend, Martin Landau, in the late 1940s or early 1950s in New York, where they were all young actors starting out and struggling together.
“She never discussed their romance in great detail, but I did know Jimmy was her first serious, grown-up relationship. It was apparently very intense and involved numerous break-ups and reconciliations, but she often remained his confidant even during some of the ‘off-again’ times.
“Eventually my mother met my father, Mark Gordon, an actor and director, and broke it off with Jimmy to go with my Dad. Jimmy actually gave her his blessing to leave—even he knew that what they had was too fraught with drama to ever be stable.
“Years later David Dalton tracked down my mother and interviewed her for his biography ‘James Dean: The Mutant King’ [first published 1974]. She is the first person thanked in the book’s acknowledgements. As far as I know, that was the first time she spoke ‘on the record’ about their time together. I think she was happy with the way the book captured the complexities of their relationship.
“I found several copies, along with James Dean’s letters to her, and other memorabilia such as reviews and photographs tucked away safely in a drawer. I hope that a fan or collector can gain as much pleasure from owning these letters as my mother clearly did from receiving them, and as I did in learning more about my mother’s history.”

The letters are being sold individually, each with prints of four 8×10 photos of Dean and Glenn, three on the beach and one with friends. Copyrights aren’t included. The auction catalog isn’t online yet, but Neil was kind enough to send me descriptions of the lots. Due to copyright restrictions, we can’t publish the letters completely—believe me, I asked! (Hmmm…is there a book in the works?)
Letter One
The first handwritten letter from James Dean to Barbara Glenn is dated in pencil in another hand (most likely Barbara’s) 1-10-54. The one page letter, in blue ink on a single sheet of St. James Hotel, Philadelphia, stationery, starts out Darling, Don’t worry about me. I’m O.K.? It’s filled with the thoughts and feelings Dean is experiencing during rehearsals for the theatrical production of “The Immoralist,” a play set in Tunis. Dean played Bachir, a North African houseboy, and was so well received in the role, he left the play early for Hollywood.
At the top of the letter are Dean’s doodles of North African style buildings, likely similar to the set; and one of a stressed-out caricature of a head, presumably his. Dean candidly stresses in the letter how unimpressed he is with the play, Probably a monster success; but to me it’s still a piece of shit, even though he concedes that he can’t tell much about it yet. His writing soon turns to more personal matters. He finishes the letter underlining his loneliness and insecurity by asking Barbara to Please write to me darling…. Please come and see me, Love Jim. The original envelope is included, postmarked Philadelphia Jan 10 1954, and with a sketch of a steer and additional writing on the back in Dean’s hand.
Letter Two
The second letter from James Dean to Barbara is three handwritten pages on two sheets of paper, and includes the original envelope. It’s dated 5-7-54, also in pencil, most likely in Glenn’s hand. Written in blue ink, the second and third sides are each signed Love Jim. Oh baby. Dean’s exasperated start develops into the tone of a very protective, caring boyfriend.
You know how I am about stuff like that. But god damn it honey with all the gory detail… when I get hold of that son of a bitch…. before developing into a more concerned and caring manner, asking how he could help her and saying how much he wanted to see her. He would soon be going on location for two weeks, and asked her if, upon his return, maybe you could come out here then? Please tell me if you could, would, etc…. Dean goes on to explain that he’d had a rough day at the studio before going on to the stable to ride his horse, Cisco, and how conquering him is a long drawn out affair. Dean expresses admiration for the horse, stating he’s full of life and I love him, before changing the subject back to his schedule, and asking again Barbara to visit him If you want to? before signing off Love Jim.

The second sheet of paper, the third page of the letter consists entirely of a post-script in which Dean returns to the subject matter of the circumstances Barbara has found herself in, exclaiming Listen to me god damn it, before pointing out Barbara’s failings. $8000 to see you in a bathing suit, boy that’s sellin’ out cheap. He ends with You’ve got no god damn respect for yourself , signing off love Jim.
Letter Three
The third letter from James Dean to Barbara Glenn is two pages in blue ink on both sides of a sheet of plain note paper, and includes the envelope. The letter is dated 5-19-54, also in pencil, most likely in Glenn’s hand. It’s signed Love Jim twice on the second side. The letter starts out Darling, and begins with the surprising opening line, I haven’t written because I have fallen in love. As you read it you realize Dean is talking about his horse, referring to the picture of Cisco the Kid, the new member of the family that he enclosed. The original photograph of Cisco and his trainer is included in the lot along with the four other photos mentioned.

Dean goes into detail, explaining that Cisco is a well-trained but very spirited horse, a thoroughbred Palomino…. may use him in the movie, before abruptly changing the subject matter by stating I’m very lonely and how I hate this place. In the next paragraph he tells Barbara not to call, explaining that he still doesn’t have a place of his own.

Just keep writing. Honey these are the nicest, sweetest letters in the world. Dean’s thoughts then turn to his and Barbara’s associates, which flames his fond memories of friends and places, and his dislike for his current location. In the last paragraph Dean asks with a sense of despondency, Maybe you can come and see me sometime, before ending on the positive note, I’ll be home soon Love Jim. A postscript asks Barbara to return the picture and finishes with a second Love Jim.

Christie’s estimates for the three lots are $£5,000-6,000 [$8,000-9,500]; £3,000-4,000 [$4,800-6,300]; and £5,000-6,000 respectively. But these are the low estimates many auction houses are known to use. While you never know what something may bring at auction, I wouldn’t be surprised to see these letters bring three-times estimates or more, even much more. They’re that rare and desirable. A friend said it best:

“These letters are very personal, and to my knowledge nothing comparable has ever come to market. They are the holy grail of this pop icon and should produce very spirited bidding, including from me.”

What Makes An Autograph Valuable?

What makes an autograph valuable? Here are six simple questions that determine the overall value of a signed article.

1. Who has signed the item? Obviously, an autograph that is very popular and scarce will hold a high value. John Kennedy will be worth a lot more than Gallagher for example.

2. What was used to sign the item? Ink, Vis and sharpie marker are king. Pencil is almost always of a lesser value.

3. What is the signature on? A signed photo, document or letter is always more valuable than a piece of paper or other odd item. In our opinion, a handwritten letter is usually the most valuable form of an autograph. Why? Besides the obvious name and signature, it may reveal something interesting about the person who wrote it. A signed photo is next and bigger photos are worth more than smaller ones. Cancelled checks are gaining in popularity as they are not likely to be forged.

4. What is the condition of the signature and item? Obviously, any damage to the item or signature will lower its value to some extent. Mint condition will always bring the highest value.

5. How many are there? Obviously, any item that is in scarce supply will have a higher value.

6. Have the forgers ruined the market? Any item that has been 'attacked' by the forgers might also have a reduced value as many collectors who do not know how to recognize authentic material will have purchased many of the forgeries thus reducing the demand.

There are, of course, other factors but this gives one a basic understanding of how a signed item is valued.

How to Preserve your Autographed Photo Collectables

I came across this article and thought it was a good one to share! We all know that preserving your photos is very important! What is the point of collecting autographs if the photos become faded and start to deteriorate in a few years because you don't handle them properly? Take a look at these autograph preservation tips!

1. Acid free is the way to go - Whether you choose plastic bags, cardboard folders or frames to display your autographs, you need to make sure that the material you use is acid free. Standard bags, folders and frames are made with materials that release acids over time. These acids can make your photographs and other memorabilia fade and disintegrate. Make sure that the products that you buy to store your autographs is clearly labeled acid-free. If the package doesn't specify that, don't trust it with your photos.

2. Keep humidity low - Humidity causes moisture which can be devastating to paper products like photographs. To keep your autographs free of humidity, store them in cool, dry places. Don't store them in a fireproof safe or standard plastic bag.

3. Frame and hang your photographs carefully - Framed autographs need special attention. Use an acid free mat in the frame. The mat should be the only part of the frame that touches the photograph. Make sure that the photograph doesn't touch the glass. If you place the photograph against the surface of the glass, the photograph will eventually adhere to the glass. When you hang the frame, make sure it's out of direct sunlight. UV light can be very damaging to ink and photos, so you're really better off not displaying them out in the open. You should avoid florescent lighting in the room where you are displaying your photographs.

4. Repair with the right materials - Never use masking tape or scotch tape to repair tears in your photographs or documents. The adhesive in these types of tape will eventually destroy your paper. You can have your autographed memorabilia repaired by a professional. You can also attempt the repair yourself by using some archival paper mending tissue obtained online or in a hobby store.

The best way to preserve your autographs for the long term is to store them in Mylar polyester or cellulose acetate folders. You can store these folders in an acid free box. Avoid the polyvinyl chloride folders that many autograph sellers use to store their wares. You can identify these types of folders by their strong plastic smell.

No matter how what type of autographs you are collecting you should take steps to preserve them for the long term. Spending time and money on your autographs only to have them ravaged by time and acid containing storage material would be very disappointing. For your best bet, keep your autographs off your walls and in a cool, dry place.

Here is a fun picture to share with you! I met Dodger Pitcher Hiroki Kuroda at the Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers game on 9/28. The Dodgers won that game 7-5.

A little information about Hiroki Kuroda - Kuroda is 36 years old and started his MLB career in 2004 after playing in Japan for 10 years. Kuroda is a right handed pitcher, his fastball has reached 97 mph, and he's had 523 strike outs so far in his MLB career! Kuroda is a legend in Japan and in 2004 helped the Japan National Baseball Team earn an Olympic bronze medal. Impressive career! It was an honor to meet him!

The most important tip that we can give you is to buy from an expert. There is no substitute for years of experience and daily contact with the major players in the industry. The Autograph Source is not the only reputable dealer in the business. Make sure that you find one that you are comfortable with.

The old adage "buy what you know" certainly applies to collectibles as well. You are much more likely to spot upward trends if you know the field that you are collecting. Become your own expert.

Don't buy it unless it makes you smile. There are many pieces out there that will appreciate in value. The best part about collecting is that, unlike a stock that sits in an account, you can enjoy owning the piece.

Build a theme to your collection. Collections are easier to sell if there is a relationship between the pieces. Quite frequently once a collection is complete the whole can be worth more than the sum of the parts.

Buy the best that you can afford. High end pieces tend to appreciate more. Generally speaking, you should strive for quality, not quantity.

Don't buy mass-produced pieces. Usually the fewer numbers that exist of an item, the more potential there is to increase in value. Typically, the pieces that appreciate the most are one-of-a-kind items.

Content, condition, and aesthetics matter. Especially with documents, content is very important. If the text has a reference to something pertaining to why the person who wrote it is famous, it can be worth much more than a "hello, how are you?" letter. The inverse is also true, if the content is out of character or shocking. The condition of the piece or document is also important. What a piece looks like is very significant to the value as well. The better it looks the more likely someone is to pay a lot of money for it.

Be very careful buying from online auction sites. Sites where anyone can sell attract many dishonest people. There are deals to be had, but once again, only buy from reputable dealers. Don't buy from people who hide behind P.O. Boxes and don't provide phone numbers. Positive feedback on EBay has NOTHING to do with whether a seller's product is real. It only tells you that they ship promptly.

If it is too good to be true, it probably isn't. If someone is knowledgeable enough to know if a piece is real, they know what it is worth. There are certain basic costs to obtaining signatures and authenticating pieces. If someone is selling items for significantly less than market value, there is a reason. Be especially careful with Rock and Hollywood Memorabilia... there are many websites set up as online dealers where every piece they have is fake. If their prices don't make sense, and other dealers won't buy their items from you... stay away!

Don't react to the market; let the market react to you. Be patient. Identify what you want to collect, and let your dealer find it for you. The dealer is more likely to give you a great price if you wait until the piece comes around. A good dealer can find almost any piece for you almost quickly, but they will usually overpay for it this way, and therefore so will you.

In the world of autograph collecting there are some specific and unique terms that all collectors should learn. As you are buying and receiving autographs it is important to be able to understand the code and language of the hobby.

1-Per: An athlete or celebrity only signing one item per person. Some organized signings advertise only one item per person, and when collectors mention the event, they will say it’s a 1-per.

AWOL/MIA: A celebrity who avoids collectors and leaves through the back door.

Bandwagon: Other fans from the concert follow collectors and can ruin a signing opportunity because it looks like too large a crowd is waiting for the celebrity. Bandwagoners are not often prepared and get trivial items signed, such as business cards or the caps they’re wearing, and sometimes only take photos.

Beauty Pageant Wave: Describes the gesture given by the celebrity when they see that you want an autograph, but just wave instead.

Cell Phone Routine: The celebrity spots a group of collectors and avoids the group by talking on their cell phone.

Close-hold: A term used by collectors when requesting other collectors to keep information on a future autograph opportunity secret.

Deco: An abbreviation referring to a DecoColor paint pen.

Double Dipping: When a collector successfully receives two or more signatures from a 1-per signer in the same setting. This is accomplished by a quick cosmetic change—adding or removing a hat or sunglasses, or both—and approaching the signer with a second item. If there is a line to get items signed, collectors can also try to simply go through the line again.

Newbie: A new or unfamiliar face amongst regulars at a particular venue. A newbie can easily be transformed into a regular by appearing frequently at the same venues and networking with other regulars.

Prepping: Preparing your items for signing.

Racking: It can either mean getting multiple items signed by the same celebrity or getting items signed by various targeted celebrities at the same venue.

Regular: Describes someone who regularly frequents signing venues, also sometimes called a veteran.

Running to the Bathroom: Describes a celebrity who is walking a quickly while signing, as though they are in a hurry to get to the restroom.

Shot Down: A term used when you are refused an autograph by a celebrity.

Stiffed: At times celebrities will decline to sign while entering a venue but state they will give autographs inside or after the even is over. Being stiffed happens when they further refuse to give an autograph when they said they would sign.

Throwing Down: Refers to a celebrity who is known for signing a lot for fans, especially multiple items in the same sitting.

PSA Opening East Coast Office

In order to better meet the increasing needs of collectors and dealers in the eastern United States, especially those in autograph collecting, Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA/DNA) Authentication Services will open an office in Woodbridge, New Jersey this summer.

In person submissions will be accepted by appointment at the New Jersey office. All other items that are submitted by mail to PSA will still need to be directed to the California office unless pre-approved by the staff.

The new office is centrally located between New York City and Philadelphia. PSA has seen increased popularity and need of certified autographs on the East Coast. This new location will provide an extra avenue for patrons to use and will improve turnaround times on submissions.

Only autographs will be processed at the New Jersey office. Other items such as trading cards, tickets, photographs, sports memorabilia and game used items will be accepted at the office but examined at the California location.

PSA will relocate some of the company's California employees, but also plans to hire additional from the area.

Phillies Hall of Fame Memorabilia Auction

At his death in May of 2010, Phillies Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts left behind the memorabilia he had collected in his 19-season career in the major leagues and his four sons. Now, almost a year after his death, the sons can't decide how to divide the mementos. During his career, Roberts had acquired a Babe Ruth signed baseball, a 1950 National League championship ring and a collection of hand painted game-used baseballs.

Because they were not able to decide, Roberts' sons put the collection up for sale. The collection was dispersed in a live auction, conducted by Hunt Auctions. Before the auction the pieces were appraised. Two of the more valued items included Roberts' Hall of Fame induction ring was estimated between $15,000 - $25,000 and his 2008 World Series ring at $20,000 - $40,000.

His sons have kept more of the personal mementos of Roberts. In addition to excelling at baseball, in college Roberts also played basketball and won a trophy for the top college basketball player at Michigan State. That same award was won years later by Magic Johnson.

Some of the proceeds of the auction were donated to the Phillies charities.

There are some autograph authenticators in the United States who are notorious for authenticating false autographs. Collectors who have bought items from authenticators such as these and have found problems when putting the items up for auction. Washington Autograph Sells for $3.2 Million

On November 9th, 1787 the first president of the United States, George Washington, wrote a letter to his nephew, Bushrod Washington. In the letter Washington laid out a series of arguments in support of adoption of the newly framed Constitution of the United States of America.

Two hundred twenty-two years later, the letter was auctioned at Christie's New York on December 4th, 2009. The sale set a record at $3,200,000 for Washington pieces. This was also one of the highest prices for an American autograph.

George Washington served as commander-in-chief of the American Revolutionary forces from 1775 to the end of the war in 1783. During the war, he struggled constantly to keep his army fed, clothed and armed and was able to succeed. The Articles of Confederation required Congress to regulate military and monetary affairs, but they were not able to force the states into complying with requests for troops or revenue. Because of this, Washington's army nearly starved to death several winters of the war.

After the Constitution was drafted in September 1787 a nationwide debate began in effort for the document to be ratified by the states. Washington understood it would be a difficult campaign for the Constitution to be ratified. This understanding and desire to gain the countries acceptance of the Constitution, led Washington to send a personal letter to his nephew Bushrod, a delegate to the Virginia State ratifying convention.

In the letter Washington made a strong case for the ratification of the Constitution. He outlined the false parts of the opposition and gave his nephew arguments to bolster support for the Constitution. He informed Bushrod that the argument boiled down to one simple proposition, "is it best for the States to unite, or not to unite?".

Admitting that the document had imperfections, Washington still explained to his nephew that it helps no one for the states not to be united and if problems arise from the Constitution they can be dealt with as a nation at a later date. In advocating for the Constitution, Washington reminded his nephew that the power must rest with the people but in order to do this the country needed a united government.

Ironically, the stationary that this letter is written on paper with a pro patria design watermark. This means the paper was English-made. The watermark is an oval with a seated woman holding a lance and then a countermark, which goes on the other have of the sheet. The countermark has the initials GR, for Georgius Rex. Washington spent seven years fighting King George III to achieve independence for the United States, then used paper carrying a watermark of the Royal Crown to advocate for the ratification of the Constitution.

The day of the auction, the auctioneer opened the bidding at $950,000. The room flew into action and bidding took the letter up to $1.5 million. As it continued to climb, competition continued between two potential buyers. The auctioneer gave the bidders a break to contemplate how high they were willing to go when the piece reached $2.8 million. The day ended at $3.2 million and a dramatic bang of the auctioneer's gavel.

Baseball Autograph Collector Gives to Charity

Recently, a baseball autograph enthusiast put her hard work towards a greater good. Jane Bell is an 83-year-old Detroit Tigers fan and since the 1980s has fought through crowds and slipped into dugouts to expand her prized collection of autographed baseballs.

She is now letting charity benefit from her efforts and is putting 136 of her autographed baseballs up for action and will give all proceeds to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Jane is planning to hold onto one particular baseball, personalized by Detroit Tigers pitcher Jack Morris in 1986. Morris wrote: "To Jane Bell, my best to you, to a loyal Tiger fan."

Jane hopes that her baseballs will bring in $3,000-$5,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. According to a local appraiser, Randall Paul, this is a reasonable goal and hopes she will reach it.

Autopen: A Fake Autograph

Celebrities have many different options when autographing memorabilia; the act of physically signing an object is fading into extinction. This trend is creating a difficult environment for collectors to find a "real" autograph. When receiving autographs by mail or other exchanges, it is important to verify that the signature was done by the actual celebrity. Celebrities who opt to use an alternate method for autographs, most commonly use the "autopen" approach.

Autopen refers to a machine that can duplicate a signature many times. A signature is copied onto a template and is then inserted into a machine. The machine can be used to print the signature onto any photograph or memorabilia.

The way to tell when an autopen was used is if the ink has a lack of natural flow, the signature is shaky or there are inconsistent ink blotches. The blotches are a result of the marker in the autopen machine coming to an abrupt halt at the end and resting in one spot before being lifted off. Each autopen signature will look exactly alike, which is unnatural for the human hand to perform.

The autopen was developed by John Isaac Hawkins in 1803. Thomas Jefferson was one of the first to start using the device in 1804 for autograph collecting. Harry Truman is believed to be the first President to use the autopen in a business way for mail and signing checks. Today this device is used by politicians and fundraisers to sign letters.

Autographed Aviation Memorabilia Collecting Turned Into a Business

Floyd Walker is a man with a love of aviation and aviation collectibles. In the 1980's he turned his passion for the autographed memorabilia into a profession that took him all around the United States. Walker began to sell models of early and mid-century planes, but found the operation to be time consuming and lacked lucrative backing.

In 1985 his business changed course, Walker was introduced to a WWII test pilot and stunt pilot Robert Hoover. Walker purchased several aviation collectibles, including shirts, hats and posters and Hoover produced the autographs. Together they sold out of items on the first day of their first three day show.

From there, Walker began to travel the country, from aviation show to aviation show, in contact with famous pilots and selling memorabilia. FBI Crashes Sports Collectors Convention in Search of Fraudulent Autographs

The National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago was crashed by the FBI for the third consecutive year and plans to investigate the possibility of fraud, counterfeiting and shill bidding.

Sports memorabilia such as signed sports cards to game balls to photographs of players are showcased every year at this event. Unfortunately, the FBI has also found reasons to be in attendance along side the sports fanatics.

The investigation is the third major federal memorabilia probe in the last 15 years. The prior investigations, Operation Foul Ball and Operation Bullpen, targeted forgers who made millions from bogus celebrity autographs. This investigation will focus on the most prestigious firms in the business. Companies being investigated include: Mastro Auctions, Grey Flannel, Heritage Auction, Professional Sports Authenticators, Hunt Auctions and Lelands.

According to dealers and collectors, the FBI agents are focusing on shill bidding, fraudulent memorabilia and card doctoring.

The Chicago grand jury is expected to hand down indictments by the end of summer. This is just another blow to the autograph collecting industry that is ridden with fraudulent pieces and con artists.

The silver lining of the situation belongs to Denver attorney Marshall Fogel, who is trying to organize a national trade association to police the industry. As of now, two dozen executives have met twice about organizing the association.

As I have said before, part of autograph collecting is dealing with the falsified documents. Right now one of the most sought after autographs is the one of the President of the United States, Barack Obama. Fraud in Autograph Collecting

Unfortunately, one of the common occurrences in autograph collecting is fraud. Countless collectors are fooled by fraudulent signatures, posing as rock stars, athletes, authors, even the founding fathers. Since the beginning of autograph collecting, con artists have been creating fraudulent pieces.

In the late 1700s, a young man by the name of William Henry Ireland made a fortune from creating fraudulent William Shakespeare signatures, deeds and letters. He even went as far as a falsified "lost play". During his rise to fame, Ireland sold countless "Shakespearian signatures".

The most important part to remember when collecting is to be sure the autograph is authenticated by an expert. Do not buy an autograph with out it being authenticated.

My other piece of advice is: "knowledge is power". Make yourself into an expert, know the product well. From the shape and form of the signature to the type of paper used. Just remember to be cautious, protect yourself with knowledge and check for authentication.

Rare Hemingway Autograph Found in Cuba

A rare autograph from the famous American writer Earnest Hemingway was found on a menu at the El Dragon Bar and Restaurant on the waterfront in Cuba. Scribbled in blue ink, Hemingway signed the menu "A delightful place, Earnest Hemingway". The lucky collector bought the menu from the restaurant for a dollar.

The autograph is valued at $3,000 to $5,000 and will be for sale at the Sixth Annual Fort Worth Postcard and Paper Show. The problem the seller will find at the auction is that the autograph has not been authenticated yet. And as I have stated in Autograph Hell, you might be 110% positive that the signature is real, but if the authenticator doesn't agree then it isn't considered 'real'.

Meaning, as you are traveling this summer, or even in your hometown be on the lookout for these lucky but rare occurrences. Just don't get too excited until it has been authenticated.

I just finished reading "Autograph Hell." An Intro and seven chapters of nothing but the truth. Autograph collector, Charles Irion has put together a book that every collector should get his hands on. From the history of collecting to his own experiences, Irion hit it right on the head. What a great, entertaining and educational read! I loved it and can't wait to read his entire "Hell" series. Anyone can see that a lot of work and time went into this book. All the calls commented on how well the book was put together---thanks--- but also how true it rings. Auctions houses seem to control alot of our destiny in terms of value perceived real or not. A First Taste

'In the early 80’s, I purchased a house across the street from my home in Phoenix, Arizona. The place I bought was a “beater.” The carpet was about 20 years old, the paint was peeling and the plumbing as in serious need of repair. I worked on the house for several months, adding paint, making repairs and just generally bringing it into the Twentieth Century. Then I put it up for sale.
Among the first to look at the house was a couple from Florida. They had just moved to town and were looking a for place to buy. Although they liked what they saw in the house, they didn’t have enough cash for the full down payment.
I thought that would be the end of dealings but it wasn’t. The couple put their heads together and came back with an offer that would change my life. They owned an antiquities store, they said, a place where a person could buy a piece of history. They had antiques, jewelry, old documents and signatures from many of the world’s most famous and interesting people. Would I, they asked, take $30,000 in trade from the store as part of the down payment? I thought about the offer overnight. The real estate market wasn’t that great at the time. There was a glut of houses on the market and if I turned the offer down I could count on owning the property for a long time before I unloaded it. And besides, owning a piece of history didn’t seem like such a bad idea.
The next morning I took the trade.
At the store I was astonished at what I saw. Historic documents were framed beautifully, signed baseballs occupied their own little cubby holes, signed basketball jerseys filled picture frames as large as Shaq’s torso. There were cancelled checks from the rich and famous, signed letters, manuscript pages, basketballs, footballs, boxing gloves, playing cards. Some of the names represented where Charles Darwin, Frank Sinatra, Magic Johnson, Farrah Fawcett, Mick Jagger, President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jackie. The infamous were there, too, including Adolph Hitler, and Evel Knievel. I remember thinking that this was like walking through a museum where you could actually buy the exhibits.
