How to Ask a Celebrity for an Autograph or Photo

Great article about what to do if you see a celebrity out and about and want to ask them for an autograph!
  1. Understand that celebrities are used to people asking them for autographs. They take it in stride, so don't be too nervous.
  2. Remember that celebrities are just people. They have real lives and responsibilities; make sure your timing is appropriate for what you want. Fans are appreciated but keep in mind that no one wants to be ambushed exiting the lavatory stall or with a mouthful of dinner at a business meeting.
  3. Approach the celebrity. Don't get so close that it annoys them. Say "Hi," tell them your name, and give a light compliment. Do not gush - they don't enjoy it. Ask a question or two. Comment on their latest movie, video, book, or whatever they're famous for.
  4. Ask for an autograph by saying "I'd love to have your autograph," or "May I take a picture with you?" Don't be shy. Be confident and smiley.
  5. Take it easy. Hold out a pen and paper, but don't stuff it into their hands.

Be organised and helpful. Hold the paper steady for them, and have the pen and paper easily accessible when you first approach them.
Tips
  • For whatever reason, it might make you feel more comfortable to ask the celebrity to write their autograph so you can give it to your friend or a child. If so, you could calm your nerves by asking in this manner.
  • Also, if you do the above step, you could tell them to make the autograph out to your brother/sister/girlfriend/ child while actually providing them with your name.
  • If you can't summon the courage to ask for that autograph, you could always try to buy one through an online auction or at a memorabilia convention.
  • It is advised not to get clothing signed. Marker and pen usually goes out after a few washes. Even permanent marker won't last forever on cloth!

Warnings

  • One thing only! Celebrities will think you will be selling stuff on eBay.
  • Do not get upset if the celebrity says no. It may not be a good time for them to sign an autograph or take a picture. It is very annoying to see a fan overreact and you may be escorted out of the area.
  • Never ask while the celebrity is eating dinner or spending what looks like quality time with family.
  • When you ask don't talk, and talk, and talk. Ask them, give your name, a compliment or two, say thank you and walk away.
  • Just give a quick, loose hug and don't act shy. They are people.
  • NEVER scream at them. You will just scare them, and they probably won't want to sign an autograph, or have their picture taken with you.

Phillies Hall of Fame Memorabilia Auction

At his death in May of 2010, Phillies Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts left behind the memorabilia he had collected in his 19-season career in the major leagues and his four sons. Now, almost a year after his death, the sons can't decide how to divide the mementos. During his career, Roberts had acquired a Babe Ruth signed baseball, a 1950 National League championship ring and a collection of hand painted game-used baseballs. Because they were not able to decide, Roberts' sons put the collection up for sale. The collection was dispersed in a live auction, conducted by Hunt Auctions. Before the auction the pieces were appraised. Two of the more valued items included Roberts' Hall of Fame induction ring was estimated between $15,000 - $25,000 and his 2008 World Series ring at $20,000 - $40,000. His sons have kept more of the personal mementos of Roberts. In addition to excelling at baseball, in college Roberts also played basketball and won a trophy for the top colleg...
