Bill Snyder Donates Autographed Footballs to Mentoring4Success

Money raised will go toward funding the program that matches inmates with mentors

Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder has dedicated his career to mentoring college football players. Now his interest in Kansas prisons will result in funds to help match inmates with mentors of their own.

Snyder recently participated in a program to promote responsible parenting by men incarcerated at El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF). While there, Snyder took time to autograph several footballs, which will be auctioned, with the proceeds dedicated to Mentoring4Success. Mentoring4Success pairs inmates who are within six months of their parole with a mentee who can assist them in a successful transition to society.
Footballs autographed by Snyder regularly sell for more than $200 apiece. Mentoring4Success coordinator Gloria Geither is excited to see how the money raised can benefit the mentoring initiative launched by Gov. Sam Brownback in 2011.

“Coach Snyder is such an advocate for mentoring, and he genuinely cares about the success of people in every walk of life, so his support goes beyond just donating the items we will auction,” said Geither. “He knows the power that a friend and role model can have in someone’s life, and he encourages everyone to give it a try.”

Snyder has won numerous conference and national coach of the year honors, and has led the Kansas State football team to 14 bowl games. Snyder is known for resurrecting the Kansas State team from the depths of college football, and he believes Kansas inmates can make the same dramatic change that his team made over the past quarter century.

At his death in May of 2010, Phillies Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts left behind the memorabilia he had collected in his 19-season career in the major leagues and his four sons. Now, almost a year after his death, the sons can't decide how to divide the mementos. During his career, Roberts had acquired a Babe Ruth signed baseball, a 1950 National League championship ring and a collection of hand painted game-used baseballs. Because they were not able to decide, Roberts' sons put the collection up for sale. The collection was dispersed in a live auction, conducted by Hunt Auctions.
